Awesome Test Takers Win Pizza Party

Rashaundra, Stephon, and Tonyea did such an awesome job during testing the last two days.  If tomorrow goes as well...they are getting a pizza party on Friday!  Keep up the outstanding work!  I am so proud of you!

I know...testing is NOT an easy task, but Rashaundra, Stephon, and Tonyea shared what has motivated them the last couple of days to do such great work on their tests.  When I asked them why they worked so hard, this is what they told me.
Rashaundra said that she knows that she wants to do her very best.  Even when she sees that her peers are speeding though the tests, she says she knows she's capable of doing better if she is "slow and steady."

Stephon said the reason he worked so hard was "he wanted to do better on this 9 weeks test."

If you're finding it difficult to focus, do what Tonyea does.  Tonyea says that from time to time she has to tell herself to be patient and remind herself of her long-term goals.

Those of you who did not win a pizza party this time- do your best work anyway. Your teachers are watching and they appreciate your best effort!

*Also, students, if your parents send back a permission slip- I'd love to post your pictures here!

Study Guide: The Male and Female Reproductive Systems

This section escribes the structures and functions of the organs in the male and female repoructive systems.  It also explains the events in the menstral cycle.

Use Target Reading Skills

As you read, make a cycle diagram that shows the mentral cycle.  Write each event of the process in a seperate circle. (pp. 473)

(1)  Days 1-4: Menstral discharge
(2)  Days 5-13: Developing egg
(3)  Days 14-15:  Ovulation occurs
(4)  Days 16-22:  Egg moves through fallopian tube.  Uterus linnig becomes thicker.
(5)  Days 23-28:  Unfertilized egg enters uterus.

Sexual Reproduction:  Match each key term with its definition. (pp. 467)

Terms:
(1)  egg
(2)  sperms
(3)  fertilization
(4)  reproduction
(5)  zygote
(6) chromosome

Definitions:
a.  The male sex cell
b.  A fertilized egg
c.  The joining of a sperm and an egg
d.  Carries the information that controls inherited characteristics
e.  The female sex cell
f.  The process by which living things produce new individuals.

Answers:  (1) e; (2) a; (3) c; (4) f; (5) b; (6) d

7.  Identify which is the egg and which is the sperm.
a.  _______________________
b. _________________________

8.  Is the following sentence true or false?  A sex cell has the same number of chromosomes as a body cell.

Answer:  False

9.  What is the male reproductive system specialized to produce?
a. __________________  b.  ________________

Answers:  sperm and testosterone

10.  Circle the letter of the organs in the amle where sperm are produced.
a.  testosterone
b.  testes
c.  scrotum
d.  penis

11.  What does testosterone control?

Answer:  Testosterone controls the development of physical characteristics in mature men.

12.  The testes are located in an external pouch of skin called the scrotum.

13.  Is the following sentence true or false?  Sperm can devleop normally only in slightly cooler temperatures than normal body temperature.

Answer:  True

14.  What does semen provide to sperm?

Answer:
a.  Semen provides an enviornment inwhich sperm are able to swim.
b.  Semen contains nutrients that the moving sperm use as a source.

15.  Semen leaves the body through an organ called the penis.

16.  What is the role of the female reproductive system?

Answer:
The female reproductive systems role is to produce eggs and if an egg is fertilized, to nourish a developing baby until birth.

17.  What do ovaries produce?

Answer:
a.  Ovaries produce eggs
b.  Ovaries produce hormones.

18.  What does estrogen control?

Answer:
Estrogen triggers the development of some adult female characteristics (i.e., hips widen and breasts develop).

19.  Complete the flowchart to show the path of an egg cell

(1) The ovary produces an egg cell.
(2)  The egg cell moves through the fallopian tubes where it can be fertilized.
(3)  The egg enters the uterus where it stays to develop if its fertilized.
(4)  An unfertilized egg begins to break down and enters the muscular passageway leanding to the outside of the body called the vagina, or birth canal.

The Menstral Cycle

20.  Circle the letter of how often an egg is released from the ovaries.
a.  daily
b.  weekly
c.  monthly
d.  yearly

Answer: c- monthly.

21.  The monthly cycle of changes that occurs in the female reproductive system is called the menstral cycle.

22.  What occurs during the menstral cycle?

Answer:
An egg develops in an ovary- at the same time, the uterus prepares for the arrival of an embryo.

23.  The menstral cycle prepares the body for pregnancy, the condition that begins after fertilization has take place.

24.  Circle the letter of each sentence that is true about menstration.
a.  menstruation lasts about 28 days.
b.  Hormones of the endocrine system control the menstrual cycle.
c.  All girls begin menstuation at the same age.
d.  Women stop releasing eggs from their ovaries at about the age of 50.

Answer: b and d.

1.a. Reviewing:  What is fertilization?
1.b.  Explaining:  Explain how fertilization produces a new individual.
1.c.  Comparing and Contrasting:  contrast the number of chromosomes in sex cells and in a zygote. Explain why the zygote has the number of chromosomes  that it does.

2.a.  Listing:  List the structures of the male and female reproductive systems.
2.b.  Describing:  Describe the functions of the structures you named in Question 2a.
2.c.  Comparing and Contrasting:  In what ways are the functions of the ovaries and the testes similar?  How do their functions differ?

3.a.  Defining:  What is the menstral cycle?
3.b.  Sequencing Events:  At what point in the menstral cycle does ovualtion start?

Writing in Science:
Explanatory Paragraph- Write a paragraph explaining why the ovaries and testes are part of both the endocrine system and the reproductive system.
